  • Challenge

For a school project at LUCA School of Arts, we were asked to design a book for an artist, based on the concept of mirroring.

How can I become is a publication created for the work of Celina Vleugels. Her practice explores themes of memory, self-reflection and grief.

The challenge was to translate an existing body of work into a cohesive editorial narrative. Rather than overpowering the artworks, the book needed to frame them by creating structure, rhythm and visual coherence while preserving their emotional sensitivity.

Our goal was to design a publication that supports the content through clarity, pacing and material presence.

    Approach

The format draws inspiration from a diary, reinforcing the intimate character of Celina’s work. The editorial structure was carefully developed to guide the reader through the different works with balance and breathing space.

Soft tonal palettes and restrained typography were chosen to complement the visual language of the artworks. The mint green protective cover strengthens the idea of a personal object that can be carried and revisited over time.

An open binding system allows the spreads to lie completely flat, ensuring each work can be experienced without visual interruption. Materiality, spacing and sequencing were treated as essential storytelling tools throughout the design process.

    Result

The result is a refined and tactile publication that brings together Celina’s work in a cohesive and considered format.

How can I become functions both as documentation and as an object in itself, a book that quietly frames the work while enhancing its presence through thoughtful editorial design.
